What is a thyroid swelling?
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that sits low in the front of the neck and controls your metabolism. A thyroid swelling means the gland, or part of it, has grown larger — you might see it in the mirror, feel a lump, or have it picked up on a routine scan.
Swellings can be single or multiple nodules, a generally enlarged gland (goitre), fluid-filled cysts or inflammation of the thyroid. The large majority are not cancerous, but each one deserves proper assessment.
Dr. Sai Prateek examines the neck, voice and swallowing, then arranges the right tests — usually thyroid blood tests and an ultrasound. Based on the results, the plan may be simple monitoring, medication, further tests or, if needed, surgery.

Thyroid swelling FAQs
Should I be worried about a thyroid lump?
Most thyroid lumps are harmless, but every new swelling should be checked so that the cause is clear and the right plan is made.
Which tests will I need?
Usually thyroid blood tests and a neck ultrasound. Other tests are added only if the results call for them.
Why see an ENT doctor for the thyroid?
ENT surgeons specialise in the head and neck, including the thyroid, and can also check whether a swelling is affecting your voice, swallowing or breathing.
Will the swelling have to be removed?
Not necessarily. Many swellings simply need regular monitoring or medication. Surgery is advised only when the findings or symptoms call for it.
