What is laryngitis?
Your voice is made in the larynx, or voice box, where two vocal cords vibrate as air passes between them. When the larynx gets swollen or irritated, the cords can't vibrate smoothly and the voice turns hoarse, weak or breaks up. This is laryngitis.
A cold or throat infection is a common trigger, but so are shouting, long hours of talking or singing, acid reflux, allergies, smoking and dusty or polluted air. Teachers, singers, sales and call-centre professionals are particularly affected.
Dr. Sai Prateek uses video laryngoscopy, a tiny camera that shows your vocal cords in close-up on a screen, to see exactly what is happening. A hoarse voice that doesn't recover within two to three weeks should always be examined.

Laryngitis & voice FAQs
What usually triggers laryngitis?
Colds and throat infections, overusing the voice, acid reflux, allergies, smoking and irritants in the air are the most frequent causes.
How does video laryngoscopy help?
A slim camera gives a magnified, moving picture of the vocal cords, so the doctor can see swelling, nodules or other changes and plan the right care.
How long should hoarseness last before I see a doctor?
If your voice hasn't recovered in two to three weeks, or hoarseness keeps returning, an ENT examination is recommended.
Is whispering a good way to rest my voice?
Not really — whispering can strain the vocal cords. Speaking softly and resting the voice as advised is better.
