What is pharyngitis?
The pharynx is the passage at the back of your mouth that carries food to the food pipe and air to the windpipe. When its lining becomes inflamed, it's called pharyngitis. A sudden sore throat with a cold or fever is usually acute pharyngitis, while a throat that stays irritated for weeks or keeps flaring up is chronic pharyngitis.
Germs cause most short-lived sore throats. Longer-lasting irritation is more often linked to post-nasal drip from allergies, acid reflux rising up from the stomach, dust and pollution, smoking, mouth breathing or heavy voice use.
Dr. Sai Prateek examines the throat in detail and, when needed, uses an endoscope or orders tests. Your treatment then targets whatever is keeping the throat inflamed.

Pharyngitis FAQs
How is acute pharyngitis different from chronic pharyngitis?
Acute pharyngitis comes on suddenly, usually with an infection, and settles within days. Chronic pharyngitis lingers or keeps coming back, and is more often due to reflux, allergies, irritants or smoking.
Will I need antibiotics?
Usually not — most sore throats are viral. Antibiotics are prescribed only when a bacterial infection is likely.
Can acidity really affect my throat?
Yes. Acid reaching the throat, sometimes without heartburn, can cause a constant scratchy feeling, throat clearing and hoarseness.
When is a sore throat a reason to see a specialist?
If it lasts more than a couple of weeks, makes swallowing or breathing hard, keeps returning, changes your voice or comes with a lump in the neck.
