Understanding the condition

When snoring is a warning sign

Almost everyone snores now and then. Nightly, loud snoring is different — it usually means air is being forced through a narrowed passage in the nose or throat. When that passage partly or fully closes again and again during sleep, it is called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and the body is repeatedly starved of a smooth, steady breath.

The narrowing can start anywhere along the airway: a bent septum or swollen nasal lining, large tonsils or adenoids, a long soft palate, a relaxed tongue base, extra weight around the neck, or allergies that keep the nose blocked.

At OGHA, Dr. Sai Prateek looks at the whole upper airway, from the nostrils to the throat, so the plan targets the actual site of obstruction. Where needed, a sleep study tells us how much your breathing is affected at night — and that decides which treatment is right for you.

FAQs

Snoring & sleep apnea FAQs

Does everyone who snores have sleep apnea?

No. Plenty of people snore without sleep apnea. But if your snoring is loud and nightly, if someone has seen you stop breathing, or if you feel sleepy through the day, it is worth being checked.

What can an ENT doctor do about snoring?

Most snoring starts in the nose or throat. An ENT specialist can look directly at these areas, find what is narrowing the airway — a deviated septum, swollen nasal lining, big tonsils or a floppy palate — and treat that specific cause.

Will I need an overnight sleep test?

Not always. If your symptoms and examination suggest sleep apnea, a sleep study helps confirm it and shows how severe it is, which guides treatment.

Is surgery the only fix for snoring?

Far from it. Weight and sleep-position changes, treating a blocked nose or allergies, laser therapy and sleep apnea devices help many people. Surgery is kept for cases where a clear structural problem needs correcting.

Should I worry if my child snores?

Regular snoring in a child is not normal. Enlarged tonsils and adenoids are a frequent cause and can affect sleep, growth and concentration, so it is worth an ENT check.
