What is malocclusion?
Malocclusion simply means the upper and lower teeth don't meet as they should. Common types include overbite (upper teeth overlap too much), underbite (lower teeth sit in front), crossbite, open bite and crowding.
Left untreated, an uneven bite can cause uneven tooth wear, chipping, gum recession, jaw discomfort and difficulty chewing. In some people, jaw position and narrow arches are also linked to mouth breathing and snoring.
At OGHA we look at the whole picture — teeth, jaws, muscles and airway — before recommending the gentlest effective correction.

Bite correction FAQs
What is the best age to correct a bite?
Many orthodontists recommend a first assessment around age seven, when early jaw issues are easier to guide. However, adults can successfully correct their bite too.
Can clear aligners fix an overbite or crossbite?
Many mild to moderate overbites and crossbites can be treated with aligners. More complex skeletal problems may need functional appliances, braces or, rarely, surgery. Your assessment will clarify the best approach.
Is bite correction only cosmetic?
No. A balanced bite helps you chew efficiently, reduces abnormal wear, can ease jaw strain and makes teeth easier to keep clean.
Does a bad bite cause jaw pain?
It can contribute. Jaw pain often has several causes, including clenching, stress and posture, so we assess the jaw joints and muscles as part of your exam.
