What is TMJ disorder?
Your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect the lower jaw to the skull just in front of your ears. Together with the surrounding muscles, they let you talk, chew and yawn. When the joints or muscles are strained or inflamed, it's known as a temporomandibular disorder (TMD).
Common contributors include clenching or grinding (often at night), stress, an imbalanced bite, poor posture, jaw injury and sometimes sleep-related breathing problems. Symptoms range from clicking and stiffness to facial pain, earache-like discomfort and tension headaches.
Because the causes are often linked, OGHA combines dental, physiotherapy and sleep expertise under one roof to treat the source, not just the pain.

TMJ & jaw pain FAQs
Can a dentist treat TMJ problems?
Yes. Dentists assess the jaw joints, muscles and bite and can provide custom splints and bite care. At OGHA we also coordinate with physiotherapists and ENT / sleep specialists when needed.
Will a night guard stop my headaches?
If your headaches are linked to night-time clenching or grinding, a custom night guard can help significantly. Headaches can have other causes, so we assess carefully and refer if needed.
Does TMJ disorder need surgery?
Most people improve with conservative treatment such as splints, physiotherapy, habit changes and stress management. Surgery is rarely required.
Is jaw clicking always a problem?
Painless clicking is common and may not need treatment. Clicking with pain, locking or limited opening should be assessed.
Can teeth grinding be linked to sleep problems?
Grinding can be associated with disturbed sleep and, in some people, with breathing issues such as snoring or sleep apnea. We can arrange a sleep assessment if your symptoms suggest this.
