When a cold doesn’t clear
Your sinuses are air-filled spaces around the nose, cheeks and eyes. When their lining swells — after a cold, with allergies, or because of a blocked drainage pathway — mucus gets trapped and infection can develop. The result is a blocked nose, thick discharge, facial pain or pressure, headache and sometimes fever.
The same chain often affects the ears and throat. Ear infections can follow a cold or blocked nose, and throat and tonsil infections are common in Hyderabad’s changing weather and pollution. Many infections are viral and settle with the right care; others need targeted treatment.
Dr. Sai Prateek examines your nose, ears and throat, using nasal endoscopy where needed, to confirm the cause. He then recommends the simplest effective treatment and looks for reasons behind repeat infections, such as allergies or a deviated septum.

Sinus & infection FAQs
How do I know if I have a sinus infection or just a cold?
A cold usually improves within a week. If symptoms last more than 10 days, get worse after starting to improve, or come with facial pain and thick discharge, it may be a sinus infection.
Do I always need antibiotics?
No. Many sinus and throat infections are viral and settle with nasal care, steam, saline rinses and symptom relief. Antibiotics are used when there are signs of a bacterial infection.
Why do I keep getting sinus infections?
Repeat infections are often linked to allergies, a deviated septum, nasal polyps or other blockages. Finding and treating the cause helps prevent them.
Can a sinus infection cause ear problems?
Yes. Swelling at the back of the nose can block the tube that drains the middle ear, leading to blocked ears, pain or infection.
When should I seek urgent care?
Seek urgent help for swelling or redness around the eye, changes in vision, severe headache, a stiff neck, confusion or a very high fever.
