Understanding the treatment

What is a root canal?

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When deep decay, a crack or injury lets bacteria reach the pulp, it becomes inflamed or infected — causing pain, sensitivity and sometimes swelling or an abscess.

Root canal treatment carefully cleans out the infected pulp, disinfects and shapes the canals, and seals them. The tooth is then protected with a filling or crown so it can keep functioning for years.

At OGHA we take a conservative view: we confirm with digital imaging that a root canal is genuinely needed, and we will tell you honestly if a simpler option is possible.

Is this right for you?

Your journey at OGHA

How root canal treatment works

A clear, unhurried process — you'll know exactly what is happening and why at every step.

Diagnose

Clinical tests and digital X-rays confirm the cause of pain and whether the tooth can be saved.

Numb & relax

Effective local anaesthesia, plus optional NuCalm® relaxation, recliner chairs and a movie to watch.

Clean & seal

Infected pulp is removed, the canals are disinfected and shaped, then sealed with biocompatible material.

Protect

The tooth is restored with a filling or a crown so it is strong enough for everyday chewing.

The benefits

Why save the tooth?

Fast pain relief

Removing the infected pulp usually relieves toothache quickly.

Keep your natural tooth

Nothing works quite like your own tooth — saving it avoids an implant or bridge.

Stops infection spreading

Treating the infection protects the bone and neighbouring teeth.

Chew normally again

A restored tooth handles everyday biting and chewing.

Natural appearance

A tooth-coloured crown or filling keeps your smile looking natural.

Often more economical

Saving a tooth is usually simpler than replacing it later.

The OGHA difference

Dentistry that looks at the whole you

At OGHA, your teeth are never treated in isolation. We connect oral health with breathing, sleep, inflammation and long-term wellbeing — and we plan every treatment for how it will serve you ten years from now, not just next week.

Root-cause diagnosis

Digital X-rays, intra-oral cameras and 3D scanning so we treat the reason behind the problem, not only the tooth in front of us.

Biocompatible materials

Thoughtfully selected mercury-free and BPA-free materials, chosen for long-term health as well as looks.

Comfort by design

Massage-chair recliners, a movie while you're treated and NuCalm® drug-free relaxation for anxious patients.

Minimally invasive first

We save natural tooth structure wherever possible and only recommend what you genuinely need.

What to expect

Timelines, number of sessions and results vary from person to person. Your doctor will confirm what applies to you after an in-person assessment.

FAQs

Root canal questions, answered

Is root canal treatment painful?

With modern anaesthesia and techniques, a root canal feels much like having a filling. In fact, it relieves the pain caused by the infection. Our comfort-first setup — recliners, movies and NuCalm® — helps anxious patients feel at ease.

How many sittings does a root canal take?

Many root canals are completed in one visit; more complex or heavily infected teeth may need two. We will tell you in advance.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Back teeth that have had a root canal usually need a crown to prevent cracking. Front teeth sometimes only need a filling. We'll advise based on how much tooth structure remains.

Is it better to just extract the tooth?

Extraction may seem quicker, but losing a tooth can lead to shifting teeth, bone loss and the need for an implant or bridge later. If the tooth can be saved predictably, we usually recommend saving it.

How long does a root canal-treated tooth last?

With a good restoration and healthy habits, a root canal-treated tooth can last for many years — often a lifetime.
